Acne products with benzoyl peroxide are a powerful remedy for the treatment of mild to moderate acne.

In combination with certain antibiotics, they are even more effective in providing the desired result than if used in isolation. In very severe acne, topical benzoyl peroxide produts in combination with oral antibiotics has been found to be helpful while a referral to a dermatologist for oral isotreninoin is awaited.

Both black and white head acne, as well as inflamed acne responds well to the use of benzoyl peroxide containing products. They come in various forms like gels, face wash, soaps, lotions and creams. They also come in various strengths of benzoyl peroxide like 2.5%, 5%, 5.5%, 10%, and 20%.

It is best to use the lower concentration product initially, and these have been found to be very effective, causing less irritations.

Common acne products with benzoyl proxide include:

Some of the above benzoyl peroxide products are stand alone products, meaning that they contain just benzoyl peroxide, while a others come in combination with an antibiotic or another agent.

You can also get some of these products over the counter, while some are only available by prescriptions only. We shall briefly look into each of them here.

PanOxyl

PanOxyl is the most popular form OF acne products with benzoyl peroxide marketed. It comes as panoxyl aquagel, 2.5%, 4%, 5%, 6%, and 10%. Panoxyl also comes as a 5% cream, 5%, 10%, and 20% gel, 5%, 10%, wash and as 5% and 10% soap, all which can be bought as over-the-counter products. Key points to note with treament include:

  • As mentioned above, it is alays best to start off with the lower strngth pnoxyl preparation like the 2.5% or 5% product, and use once or at most twice a day for at least 6 weeks for good results to be obtained.

  • For good result, it is a good idea to wash the face with warm water and allow the face to dry before applying the benzoyl peroxide product.

  • It is also worth warning that during the initial first two weeks of using acne products with benzoyl peroxide, your skin may look worse than it was before starting, but with persistence, things will then turn around and results will start manifesting. A treatment period of at least about 3 months is advised with these products.

Local irritation observed with acne products ith benzoyl peroide include redness of the area of the skin they have been applied to, peeling off of the skin and dryness. They also cause bleaching of hair and staining of beddings and clothes they come in contact with.

Quinoderm

Quinoderm is a benzoyl peroxide product that also contains a cleansing agent that is found to be very good for zits and spots. The ingredients in it are benzoyl peroide and potassium hydroxyl-quinoline sulphate.

It comes in two strenghts - the 5% cream and 10% preparation. For first time users and those with sensitive skin, the 5% cream is advised to be used as first choice. This is again because it is less likely to cause significant irritation compared with the 10% cream.

Brevoxyl

Brevoxyl is another very popular of the acne products with benzoyl peroxide. It contains 4% benzoyl peroxide. It comes as a gel or cream. Apart from benzoyl peroxide, it also contains alcohol, and some fragrance.

This medication is more or less like panoxyl, as they are basically about the same in terms of main constituent - benzoyl peroxide. It does bleach clothes and hair like panoxyl, though to a lesser extent because if contains only 4% of benzoyl peroxide, compared to preparatons that may have 5%, 10% or 20% of benzoyl peroxide.

Brevoxyl is best used for chest and back acne, but can be used for face lesions too.

Acnecide

Acnecide is a 5% benzoyl peroxide prodcut made by Galderma. It comes as a face wash or gel.

It is an over the counter acne medication - meaning you can buy it over the counter without a doctors prescription. Like all medications, it should be used with care. Many have found it to be ver useful as a face wash at night, before going to bed.

The gel can also be used at night after washing face with water, the gel is applied to the zit spots and left for 1 to 5 minutes, then washed off with water.

It can be used for moderate acne, affecting the face, back and chest.

Like most acne products with benzoyl peroxide, acnecide could stain or bleach your hair and fabrics. It can also cause you to tan and burn easily in sun if your expose your skin to direct sunlight.

Acncide

Acncide is more or less like acnecide in strength of benzoyl peroxide, uses and cautions. It contains 5% benzoyl peroxide and comes in gel or face wash.

Can be used one or twice a day for face, back and chest acne of moderate severity.

Duac

Dauc is a combination type of the acne products with benzoyl peroxide and in addition to a special antibiotic called clindamycin.

The addition of the clindamycin help improve the action of this product than if each of them where used on their own. The poerful peeling effect of benzoyl peroxide exposes the pores of acne, pimples and zits, exposing the strong antibiotic effect of clindamycin and indeed benzoyl peroxide too to the offending acne bugs.

It is applied to the spots and surrounding areas one daily - preferrably in the evening after washing the affected skin and drying it up.

You will need a doctors prescription to get this medication.

Clearasil

Clearasil ia another benzoyl peroxide product used for the treatment and prevention of acne. It mainly contains salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, 5%.

Clearsil comes in various range of formulations for all skin types. It helps clear redness of teh skin, zits and spots, and helps the skin pores breath naturally.

Oxy-10

Oxy-10 is a benzoyl peroxide product containg 10% benzoyl peroxide. It is a high strength benzoyl peroxide preparation.

Benzamycin

Benzamycin is one the less popular but very effective acne products with benxyl peroxide and another antibiotic called erythromycin.

It contains a 3% erythromcin base, and is useful for those with moderate acne - white heads or blackheads with surrounding redness and pain.

It is a prescription only medication.

As a general rule, when using any of the acne products with benzoyl peroxide, becareful not to use too much, and watch out for staining of clothes and hair. The lower the strenght of preparation, the better.
